Kenya is well known for the big five, Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo which can be easily spotted in the majestic Masai Mara. Kenya really does have everything, snow-capped peaks, the vast rift valley with Msasa and Acacia trees interwoven with Baobabs as far as the eye can see, giving way to idyllic golden beaches along the Mombasa coast with magnificent diving.
See throngs of wildebeest thundering along the Great Rift Valley in the Masai Mara and experience the sky, flecked with flocks of salmon-coloured flamingos on Lake Nakuru. Only in the Masai Mara are you likely to see a leopard lounging in a tree, a cheetah stalk an impala and a pride of lions playing with their cubs all in the same day.
Be sure to learn about the cultures of the main tribes, the historically warring Masai, the Samburu and the Kikuyu and observe the conservation processes in place to protect their wildlife, culture and lifestyle.
Other places of interest for nature lovers are Amboselli Game Reserve and Tsavo Game Reserve, both known for sightings of elephants in large numbers and Tsavo which is renowned for its black rhino. And for bird-lovers, be sure to visit the stunning Lake Naivasha which lies at the highest point of the Great Rift Valley and is home to over 400 species of birds.
From here it is a short journey to Lamu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited town. The architecture is reminiscent of Arabian, European and Indian architecture with a discernible Swahili influence.
Old world colonial charm is ever-present in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, whilst Mombasa and the Indian Ocean coast host a wealth of luxurious beach resorts so that the wonders of the Mombasa Marine National Park can be seen from a dhow or a dive boat.
