The falls were aptly named ‘Mosi-oa-tunia’ meaning ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ by the local tribes, but the English explorer David Livingstone renamed them after Queen Victoria. The Falls are one of the seven wonders of the world and are truly magnificent. Whilst visiting the breathtaking Victoria Falls and the Victoria Falls National Park you can experience the thrill of white water rafting below the falls and the exhilarating ‘flight of the angels’ where you fly along the great expanse of the chasm of the falls and then fly vertically through the cauldron in the middle of the falls.
There are a number of outstanding safari parks from which to witness the wildlife of Africa. Bumi Hills Safari park, Lana Pools Safari park and the largest safari park, Hwange National Reserve, are all well worth a visit to experience the big five and other African wildlife in the stunning African bush.
Be sure to visit Great Zimbabwe, a ruined stone city in south eastern Zimbabwe. Once the capital city of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe and built by the ancestral Shona tribes, Great Zimbabwe has been adopted as a national monument. It is a World Heritage UNESCO site and the now independent state of Zimbabwe was named after it.
North East of Harare, the vibrant Jacaranda tree-lined capital city, is the Eastern Highlands which is well worth a visit. Reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, the Eastern Highlands is an area of thousands of hectares of pine trees planted by the early British settlers lending this area a unique atmosphere of Scotland in the heart of Africa.
