The UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Québec is a great place to start your Eastern Canadian adventure. Take a walk around the old cobbled streets within the fortified city wall, enjoying artisan cafés and impressive architecture along the way. Take a stroll along the St. Lawrence River or see Canada’s oldest city from a cruise boat along the river, taking in spectacular sights such as the iconic Chateau Frontenac whilst learning more about the origins of this historic town. Be sure to allow time to take a trip to the nearby Montmorency Falls where you can walk across a suspension bridge above the falls should the mood take you.
Next, why not visit Historic Montréal, wandering amongst its cobbled streets and the Old Port. This multicultural French-Canadian city is home to the dramatic Notre Dame Basilica, Jardin Botanique and the Museum of Fine Arts, along with many other museums and a great food scene. The panoramic views from the city’s namesake hill, Mont Royal are also not to be missed.
In Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, world class cultural attractions await including an exceptional collection of museums. The impressive Gothic-style Parliament buildings dominating the skyline are a must, as is a boat trip down the famous UNESCO-designated Rideau canal, or in the winter when the canal freezes over, you can swap the boat for ice skates.
Round off your trip spending in a few days in Canada’s most cosmopolitan, vibrant city of Toronto. The variety of sights to visit include the CN tower, standing almost 2,000 ft over Lake Ontario, The Hockey Hall of fame, The Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Perhaps you could take in an ice hockey, basketball or baseball game or spend time shopping in the upmarket Yorkville District or trendy Queen Street. For food-lovers, be sure to visit the 200-year-old St. Lawrence Market in the old town, home to over 200 vendors selling everything from seafood, to pasta to artisanal bread. Be sure to sample the famous peameal bacon sandwich from the Carousel Bakery in St. Lawrence Market.
No trip to Ontario would be complete without a visit to the spectacular Niagara Falls, around 90 minutes’ drive from Toronto. There are many ways to experience the natural wonder of the Niagara Falls, be it by boat to the face of the falls, the Journey Behind the Falls or by helicopter from above. For the more adventurous traveller, there is even a zip line over the river. If time allows, be sure to visit the charming Victorian town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you can experience theatre, fine dining, shopping and visits to the Niagara estate wineries.
